Kunstlerroman

A Kunstlerroman is a sub-genre of a Bildungsroman is that it recounts the growing up (and sometimes later development) of an artist. Examples might include:
  • David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
  • On Human Bondage by Somerset Maugham
  • The Moon and Sixpence by Somerset Maugham, a fictionalised biography of Paul Gauguin
  • A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce
  • The Agony and the Ecstasy by Irving Stone, which is about Michelangelo
  • Lust for Life by Irving Stone which is about Vincent Van Gogh
  • My Name is Asher Lev by Chaim Potok
  • Lanark by Alasdair Gray
  • Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson
